THE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE

As a volunteer for Globus Cares, you will provide intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) for charitable spine surgeries and use your skills to change the lives of patients who would not otherwise have access to this type of care and technology.

  • Use your medical skills and expertise to provide charitable spine surgery abroad
  • Interact and interface with medical professionals, volunteers, and patients abroad
  • Educate medical professionals on intraoperative neuromonitoring, and its significant impact on patient care and outcomes

COST: Globus Cares will pay for and book your flight and accommodation during the trip. You may also be reimbursed for baggage, carrying medical supplies or equipment – personal baggage will not be reimbursed. Volunteers will be responsible for all other travel-related expenses (i.e., non-team meals, airport parking or taxi fees, souvenirs, etc.). Volunteer costs vary for each mission location, please inquire about expected financial responsibility prior to committing to a trip.

SELECTION & APPLICATION PROCESS: IONM volunteers are selected by the NCS Philanthropy Committee – a group of NCS employees who have been long-time volunteers for the Globus Cares Medical Mission Program – in partnership with Globus Cares and HR. Clinical experience, philanthropic spirit, HR standing, and scheduling is all taken into consideration during the selection process. Volunteers are matched with the medical mission that best suits their strengths.

The application will ask for the following information:

  • Confirm that your manager is completing the manager reference form – attached
  • Your contact info
  • Your CURRENT Neuromonitoring training and education credentials
  • Your CV, CNIM Certification and or other professional credentials
  • A clear photos of your passport
  • The medical mission trips you are interested in attending
  • A short statement about your interest and why you should be selected

IONM VOLUNTEER MINIMUM REQUIRMENTS:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Valid passport and/or visa required:
    • U.S. passport holder: Passport must be valid for 6 months past date of entry into Honduras. A visa is not required for a stay in Honduras up to 90 days
    • Non-U.S. passport holder: You are responsible for confirming your passport meets entry requirements and you have proper documentation to re-enter the U.S. (i.e., valid Permanent Resident Card). If required by your country of citizenship, you are responsible for securing your own visa. Must have current CNIM Certification (NOT expired)
  • IONM Experience: Actively monitoring procedures as an NCS Neurophysiologist for a minimum of two years, with a minimum of two years previous Cadwell, Xltek, or Eclipse-based IONM experience.
  • Must have current CNIM Certification (NOT expired)
  • Must have manager approval and reference
  • Must be in good standing with no previous disciplinary actions in HR Personnel File
  • Must meet all training and education and credentialing requirements of the selected mission
  • Must have an in-depth knowledge of neuroanatomy, anesthesia protocols, and neuromonitoring troubleshooting practices Cadwell, Xltek, or Eclipse systems
  • Must attend all mandatory pre-mission planning calls
  • Must possess the ability to work in/adapt to unfamiliar environments
  • Must possess the ability to effectively communicate with surgical teams and anesthesia
  • Must possess the ability to provide instructions/information to mission personnel and/or other stakeholders relative to neurophysiology, mission procedures and activities

IMPORTANT: Globus Cares is a separate nonprofit entity from Globus Medical and NuVasive Clinical Services. This opportunity is not a corporate sponsored experience or trip. You are afforded the opportunity to volunteer as an employee of NCS, but you will attend as a volunteer for Globus Cares. You will not be paid for your time, cases will not be counted towards your bonus, and you will be required to take time off as you would for a vacation or leave from work.
